PEOPLE WITH NO HEADS<\/span>

he was an artist<\/span>
although he no longer painted<\/span>
she was a poet<\/span>
although she no longer wrote<\/span>

she was also his model<\/span>
and the mother of his six children<\/span>
whom they raised together<\/span>

for a while we were quite close<\/span>
but then our paths<\/span>
took different directions<\/span>
although whenever I saw<\/span>
one or both of them<\/span>
occasionally over the years<\/span>
we would always stop and talk<\/span>

then one night I saw him<\/span>
on his own in a pub<\/span>
and he told me<\/span>
she had left him<\/span>
and was now nursing in London<\/span>

“people with no heads” he added<\/span>

I assumed he meant<\/span>
she had become a nurse<\/span>
to the mentally ill<\/span>
for surely the decapitated<\/span>
were beyond nursing<\/span>
