{"id":10286,"date":"2016-03-08T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ink.verticalplus.co.uk\/archive\/?p=10286"},"modified":"2016-03-05T11:45:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-05T11:45:54","slug":"london-undercurrents-joolz-sparkes-and-hilaire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inksweatandtears.co.uk\/archive\/london-undercurrents-joolz-sparkes-and-hilaire\/","title":{"rendered":"London Undercurrents &#8211; Joolz Sparkes and Hilaire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thames freeze<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My lady is taking me to see<br \/>\nan elephant traverse the icy Thames.<br \/>\nI\u2019m a-feared lest we fall in like them two ladies<br \/>\nlast winter, or worse, like that poor man<br \/>\ndrowned\u2013\u2013frozen afore he hit the water.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll lace her ladyship\u2019s boots tight,<br \/>\nwind her up in the warmest fabric<br \/>\ns\u2028pin her bonnet down with 8 pins,<br \/>\ndouble-bow the muslin strip under her chignon.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll link arms like sisters, I no longer maid,<br \/>\nfor the tip-toe walk across planks at the edge<br \/>\nuntil we reach thick sturdiness<br \/>\nmade from dirty water.<\/p>\n<p>I telled my lady it\u2019s easier to get on<br \/>\nand off the ice here on the north side\u2013\u2013she<br \/>\narched her brow thankful, for she is loathe<br \/>\nto \u2028cross to the south at all costs. So all\u2019s well<br \/>\nand \u2028happen she\u2019ll keep to the middle.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll send me to get salted fish<br \/>\nand \u2028sweetmeats. Me, skipping, trying not to tumble,<br \/>\nfrozen nose and fingers and breath like icicles,<br \/>\neyes agog at the big old elephant<br \/>\nand the \u2028men that keep him from flattening the lot of us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joolz Sparkes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sacked from Cook\u2019s Confectioners<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Battersea Rise, 1923<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I never pilfered. I was dancing on the metal<br \/>\ntopped table, showing off my donkey-kicks<br \/>\nwhen Mr Cook walked in.
