Mike is a freelance writer and ex-IT consultant. He lives near Bradford and has had poems published on the <a href=\"http:\/\/leadstoleeds.com\/#poems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leads to Leeds<\/a> website and in anthologies from Beehive Poets, most recently alongside Ian Duhig, Steve Ely and others.<\/p>\n<p>Mike receives a \u00a310 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalbooktokens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Book Tokens<\/a> gift card.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electricity and void<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are mostly electricity and void<br \/>\nand, mostly, it suits me to believe<br \/>\nmatter illusion, time a mystery.<br \/>\nBut on this warm-cold night in early spring<br \/>\nyou lay your material, electrical void<br \/>\nnext to mine, and nothing is important<br \/>\nbut the solid and the here \u2013 unless<br \/>\nit\u2019s the memory of the breeze that lapped<br \/>\nat our mezzogiorno sweat,<br \/>\nbefore standing at the window,<br \/>\nlooking down on the whitewashed wall,<br \/>\nteeming with insect life,<br \/>\nready to sing like angels.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Voters comments included:<\/p>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s my kind of poetry. Reminds me of Douglas Dunn; almost Larkin. Very Farren too, no doubt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One of those short pieces of prose that, as you read it several times, you come to gain a very vivid image of a place and time that holds great personal meaning to, and left an very enduring impression with, the writer. Very uplifting, and I love the final line.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A resonant poem sharing a touching personal moment; what it means to be present and alive to our experience and the world beyond.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The imagery seems familiar but is a challenge. I am hoping that my mezzagiorno sweat also goes when I stand at the window.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This poem has a resonance that I find deeply appealing<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It stayed me with for days.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[I liked] the imagery and the sense of life<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Captures the pain and beauty of being alive<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mike&#8217;s poem captured a very human moment, describing a great feeling of tenderness and hope in a few lines.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The unexpected imagery and the distance it travels.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Comments on the rest of the shortlist included:<\/p>\n<p>Diana Brodie, <em>Happy<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Spare and precise expression, moving and surprising, mysterious and thought-provoking.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;it left a mark in my mind which remained with me long after I had finished reading all the poems.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Zelda Chappel, <em>Exhalations<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I love the way Zelda takes a relationship &amp; turns it into something tactile &#8211; something that gets into your bones<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The language, the way it sounds spoken out loud, the flow, the rhythm, the force of it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kitty Coles, The Thin Woman<\/p>\n<p><em>Imagery that instantly grabs attention and is memorable; good robust language.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>reminiscent of Sylvia Plath but different and very visual<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Roy Connolly, <em>Des bons mots<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Such technical brilliance, such mordancy<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;All things considered takes ages.&#8217; Simply the best opening line I&#8217;ve ever read.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Seth Crook, Three Years<\/p>\n<p><em>Pure and limpid voice, restrained emotion, for me it&#8217;s word perfect.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One word leads gently and flawlessly into another, building an intimate world that nevertheless allows me to participate in it.
