\nnarrow, neglected ledges are now bright diagonals
\nframing buildings, fixing whole
\nbackdrops of dull brick in relief.
\nDumps, coal heaps are hidden and
\nall the long, industry stained line,
\nthat oil-black to London track,
\nlies sheathed in virgin white.<\/p>\n
\nlike impressions, lightly sketched.
\nBeside the tracks, traces of ochre
\nstroked by some Japanese sable
\nimply grasses newly implanted
\nand a factory’s a pendant between
\ntwo washes of different white \u2013
\na pearl on an imperial breast,
\na majestic mound of Muscovite domes.<\/p>\n
\nit was not sky flakes that fell to
\ndrape and bury an unbeautiful world.
\nThey are not snow drifts there settled
\nin sharp elbows round the chimneys
\nmaking purple shadows on the sheer white
\nroofs.\u00a0\u00a0 They are just rucks in the paper
\nfor no snow fell.\u00a0\u00a0 It was the pure paper
\nthat surfaced and sucked clean<\/p>\n
\nSo sense is transformed in the suburbs,
\nbut in the city the very surface
\nof the paper is so pocked and pitted
\nthat no whiteness can ever emerge.
\nSnow here is churned like ash in the sugar.
\nlike windscreen glass it litters the walk.
\nHere the permanent deep world of the grey
\nneither snow, time nor imagination changes.<\/p>\n
